TRIAD update and historical analysis

Pre-winter 2019-2020

Changes to TRIAD Rates

Last TRIAD season, the government’s plans to steadily reduce TRIAD income available to generators were finalized, and the first step in reducing the rates was implemented. Export payment rates saw an average reduction of approximately 35% when compared to the previous year, though some areas experienced a much higher reduction than others.

The greenest summer on record

This summer has been labelled as the “greenest” on record for energy by the National Grid because 52% of the UK’s electricity requirement was met by low carbon sources, the highest percentage yet, and a great achievement considering that four years ago it was only 35%.

Energy storage is more than just batteries

Mention energy storage and many people will first think of batteries. While this is part of the story, electricity is just one form of energy. Growers may be more familiar with heat released through the combustion of fuel in a boiler or engine, for example.

Are TRIADs coming to an end?

Proposals being considered by OFGEM may significantly reduce TRIAD income for embedded generators (EG). Bearing in mind that it can be worth £40,000-£60,000 p.a. for every 1MW of generation capacity, this could be quite a financial blow.
